Title: Frame House
Location of Proejct: Raleigh, North Carolina
Project Completion Date: 12/2020
Firm Name: katherine hogan architects, PC
Short Description: In this dwelling, the frame defines more than a form. Our clients emphasized distinct criteria and highlighted unique elements of the site. Composed of a compressed programmatic bar and a series of open frames, the residence simultaneously maintains privacy from neighbors and maximizes open area for gathering. Paring their love of art exhibition with their appreciation for people, the social nature of the house projects through the frames and spills into the exterior. Working backwards through the wall section and detailing the tectonic language, in turn, reinforced this diagram. Thus, the parts become the whole.
Architect's Statement: The house is located at the end of a cul-de-sac carefully hidden in the neighborhood, but for guests the house is a definitive structure made to define place. Inhabiting a frame embodies a unique experience for the family while natural light and art bring the house warmth. Looking out from a frame will show curated views of the yard, the neighborhood, and even the downtown skyline. One of the exterior features, a full-sized length lap pool, extends the interior living room of house beyond its frame and into a social outdoor space.
Our clients have strong ties to design and keen attention to detail. Combining their love of showcasing art and appreciation for people, the home frames and exhibits the social nature of domestic life. The indoor and outdoor relationship of the house remains flexible so that gatherings can happen anywhere on the property. At the same time, the quiet areas of the house remain tucked into more discrete frames on the second floor. Solar panels were added to the roof and enough power is generated for everyday use and and stored in batteries.
