Title: Trident Technical College South Carolina Aeronautical Training Center
Location of Proejct: North Charleston, SC
Project Completion Date: October 2019
Firm Name: brianwurst@ls3p.com
Short Description: Inspired by the cutting-edge aeronautics field, this aeronautical training center carries a sleek, contemporary,
streamlined aesthetic. Monochromatic neutrals in black, gray, and white are highlighted with accents of deep blues
and vivid greens. Floor patterns and light fixtures provide wayfinding through the gallery space like white trails in the
sky from a jet engine, and ceilings sweep upward like an aerodynamic wing tip. The entry volume features a
graceful swooping curve anchoring the two-part form. A linear bar holds high-bay hangar space alongside the lab
and classroom wing; vertical planes slide past each other to enliven the façade.
Architect's Statement: In recent years, accelerating growth in the aeronautics industry has fueled the need for a skilled advanced
manufacturing workforce. This new aeronautical training center recognizes the need for both trained workers and the
economic development opportunities inherent in this growth. Located less than five miles from an international
manufacturer, the training center serves as a direct link between academic and training programs and industry.
The design references the materials, clean lines, and art and craft of making which go into an aircraft. A two-part
form, inspired by the aircraft as a form generator, consists of a linear bar which holds high-bay hangar space
alongside the lab and classroom wing. These components are connected to a distinctive entry volume featuring a
graceful swooping curve; vertical planes slide past each other to enliven the façade. Strategic canopies and
shading devices add depth and visual interest to the exterior while controlling solar heat gain, and a curved
sunshade brow delineates the entry.
The exterior materials palette plays with solidity and transparency through generous glazing and façade detailing.
The design prioritizes framed views in and out of educational spaces to create connections to nature, while
massive columns subtly reference aviation. Inside, technical equipment and learning spaces are on full display,
highlighting the leading-edge tools and the complex, hands-on learning taking place in the labs and classrooms.
The circulation flows from lab to classroom to hangar, echoing the progression of training. A gallery with a
monumental stair highlights physical and visual connectivity between spaces.
The interiors continue the sleek, contemporary, and streamlined aesthetic. Monochromatic neutrals in black, gray,
and white are highlighted with accents of deep blues and vivid greens while floor patterns and light fixtures provide
a sense of wayfinding through the gallery space like white trails from a jet engine. Ceilings sweep upward like an
aerodynamic wing tip. The program includes first-floor training space in two massive hangars; second-floor labs,
flex spaces, auditorium, prefunction space, and a café; and third-floor training and gathering spaces.
