Short Description: The university desires to construct a new building on the site of Broughton Hall, at 2601 Katharine Stinson Drive, benefiting on the efficiency in consolidating the current Price Music Building and Broughton Hall into one building. The University intends to utilize this project as an opportunity to “activate” the street life along Stinson Drive. and made this project the first example of a long-term re-development of the vicinity including buildings and grounds. This design is to develop a design solution with a clear understanding of the program requirements and environs to facility the street life along Stinson Drive.
Architect's Statement: Current North Carolina State University Music Department teaching facilities are outdated and inadequate. The university desires to construct a new building on the site of current Broughton Hall, located at 2601 Katharine Stinson Drive, benefiting on the efficiency in consolidating current NC State Music Department located at Price Music Building and Broughton Hall into one building. The University intends to utilize this project as an opportunity to “activate” the street life along Stinson Dr. and made this project the first example of a long-term re-development of the vicinity including buildings and grounds. There is a proposal Talley Center Bridge from the Broughton Hall site over the train track to Talley Center which redirect current pedestrian traffic (the three under train track tunnels) from North campus to Talley Center. The purpose of this project is to develop a design solution with a clear understanding of the program requirements and environs to facility the street life along Stinson Drive.
The building consists main section in the west side, five stories tower, the top two levels cantilever out toward east. The program consists rehearsal halls, instruction facilities, office space and common supporting regions. The two large rehearsal halls need to be in the lower level with easy access because of large music instruments. There are practice rooms and instrument storage closets next to the rehearsal halls to enhance the isolation of sounds transmission. The top two levels cantilever out consisting common space, the student lounge / lobby facing north side, the Stinson Drive, and offices facing south maximize utilizing daylighting at fourth level, and the classrooms at the fifth level.
There is a bridge connection under the cantilever, between the second level of the building to the Talley Center Bridge on the east side. There is a courtyard at the lower level under the bridge, the garden along the Stinson Drive and the terrace garden on the south side of the bridge connection. There are walking paths on both side of the bridge connection to the Talley Center Bridge. The garden and terrace around the bridge connection under the cantilever, provide a large green area along the Stinson Drive, and offers an outdoor gather space along the Stinson Drive.
