Short Description: The Nichols Volunteer Fire Department built 2018-2019 in Nichols, SC
is a 5000 sf metal building on concrete was built with Federal Flood Relief Funds.
It was built to replace its Previous building-- destroyed in the Flooding of Hurricane Mathew.
Architect's Statement: "Give us the most affordable, plain metal building you can design "
This was the request relayed to the architect by the project engineer and client.
The client did not expect the simple modernist design proposed.
The client expected maybe a mundane solution- or expensive building.
The architect used only a red facade, a shed slope and classic modern simplicity,
It aims to be emblematic like a uniform, with a crisp nature of this modest solution is
Salute to all Firefighters and as beacon to those in need.,
Its elevations suggest a dress uniform-
The Front elevation - like the cuffs or shoulders of Fire man's dress uniform- indicating rank and time of service
The Left elevation to match the salute of the white glove hand
The Rear and Right Elevations - Smooth and Crisp like the uniform itself.
